Obituary for Loretta J. Washington (Bullock)

On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, after a brief illness, our family sadly lost our mother, sister, cousin, and friend, Loretta J. (Bullock) Washington, with her family at her side. Loretta was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 14, 1952, to James Drayton and Lessie E. (Bullock) Jackson. She was fun and loving as a child and quick with the tongue to defend her loved ones. Loretta was affectionately called Retta and Rett by her siblings and family.

Loretta had three daughters, Jessica M. Dawn, Chandra E. Askew, and LaToya R. Brown. Her daughters were significant to her. In preparation for 1st-grade educational success, Loretta began educating them at home, ensuring they were ready. She also worked as their bus monitor for Boston Public Schools and took time to read books to their elementary school classes.

Loretta was employed by Atlas Engineering and ECA of Cambridge before a 32-year career at Raytheon Corporation, where she retired in 2014. Loretta met her soulmate, Wilbur Washington, at Raytheon. Wilbur and Loretta had a fun and loving courtship before marrying in 1999. They were happily married and loved living life together.

Loretta had a passion for arts and crafts. She could find her sewing, crocheting, candle making, and creating wreaths, to name a few of her remarkable artistic creations. She also enjoyed her leisure time experiencing life through travel and cruising to tropical places.

Loretta treasured her extended family and loved hosting family cookouts in the backyard, Thanksgiving dinners, and enjoying Christmas by exchanging Christmas gifts with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on Christmas Eve. Loretta loved to laugh, and her sense of humor kept you on your toes.

Her father, Willie “JC” Drayton, mother, Lessie E. (Bullock) Jackson, and husband, Wilbur Washington, preceded Loretta in death.

Loretta leaves to cherish her wonderful memories with her three daughters, Jessica M. Dawn, Chandra E. Askew, and LaToya R. Brown; five siblings, Kevin Drayton, Ronald Drayton, Sheila Drayton, Percy Drayton (Denise), and Pamela Drayton-Cooper (Alonzo); eight grandchildren Curtis Dawn, D’Shaun Dawn, Ashanti Brown, Bryana Askew, NaKymrha Dawn, Allexandrya Dawn, and Troy Askew; seven great-grandchildren, Kaiya Poulin, Curtis Dawn Jr., D’Shaun Dawn Jr., D’Kari Dawn, Londynn Dawn, D’Shyla Dawn, Shiloh Green; bonus daughter and granddaughter, Kimberlee Holliday and Teniya Holliday, and one bonus brother, Calvin Cheek (Kim); father-in-law William “Willie” Washington, two sisters-in-law, Loretta Jackson, and Anetta Covington; three Goddaughters, Stephanie Allen, Caroline Braxter and Janice Hill; and a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friend.

Face masks are required for all individuals visiting the funeral home and church, regardless of vaccination status. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
