Obituary for Leviticus Green McNeil

Leviticus Green McNeil, affectionately known as ‘Po Boy’, was a long-time resident of Boston, MA. He was born on October 28, 1945 in Sanford, North Carolina. Lee was one of six children born to the late Joe H. McNeil, Sr. and Rosie Dowdy McNeil-Bell. After a courageous battle with cancer, Lee transitioned to be with his Lord with his loving wife of 50 years, Roslyn, by his side.

In his youth, Lee attended Johnsonville High School located in North Carolina, and later set roots in Boston, MA., where he remained a life-time resident. For a short time, Lee and Roslyn moved to Los Angeles California, but his heart was back in Massachusetts with his loving family and they returned back to the South End that he loved.

He worked as a truck driver for D&R trucking for many years. Lee was so good at driving those big trucks he would race them against Joe, Jr. and Nate. He could drive anything. One of his most treasured cars was a maroon velvet Mercury Comet rag top. He saw that car at D&R trucking and he had to have that car. It was an unusual car and one of a kind and boy did he love it! He finally got it and would drive that car up and down Mass Avenue.

Lee could always be found tinkering with cars and painting both the interior and exterior of houses, and doing carpentry and roofing. If a car was broken, Lee would certainly know how to fix it. You could find Lee with his long-time friend, Steve, doing something to a car somewhere. Lee loved to go and visit his sister, Janice, every morning before 6:00 a.m. and loved throwing rocks at her window to wake her up. Janice would ask Lee, “don’t you ever sleep?”. He also loved visiting with his Mom, Rosie, and would walk down there rain or shine, snow or ice to see her. He also loved hanging out with his nieces and nephew: Delena Smith, Carl Horner and Charity Nylander. He could walk so fast he almost was running.

In his younger life, Lee was a golden gloves boxer and never lost a fight. He would tell his little nephews that wanted to box Uncle Lee, “you don’t want none of this”, and he meant that. Lee loved to dress in the finest clothes and was always sharp down to the handkerchief in his breast pocket.

Lee was preceded in death by his loving mother, Rosie Dowdy McNeil-Bell, his father, Joe H. McNeil, Sr. and his brothers, James C. McNeil, Samuel H. McNeil, and Joseph McNeil, Jr. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife of 50 years, Roslyn McNeil; his son, Ronald Leviticus McNeil Scott; his daughter, Marie Carthon; eleven grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren; his sister, Janice McNeil-Horner; and his brother, Gene A. McNeil (Jennifer McNeil); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many friends. He also leaves to mourn his life-long friend, Steve Ashmore and Nathaniel Pearson who came to Boston from Sanford with him. He will be sorely missed by all!
