Obituary for Helen Valerie Shelley

Helen Valerie Shelley, affectionately known as “Val”, passed away October 17, 2022,. She was a force to be reckoned with. The many lives she touched from her advocacy is endless for “her” students and those in her community. She leaves a legacy and will be truly missed.

Valerie was born May 20, 1948, in Boston, MA. She was the sixth of fourteen children born to George and Helen Bynoe. She was born and raised in Roxbury, MA in the Orchard Park Housing Development, now known as Orchard Gardens.

Valerie was educated in the Boston Public Schools and attended Cambridge College where she earned her Master’s degree in Education. Val started working for various Boston Public Schools in the 70’s during the busing era which shaped her commitment to work with families and students. Her longest tenure was working at Charlestown High School, as Dean of Discipline. Countless students and faculty can attest to her guidance and kindness.

She moved back to Orchard Gardens in 1999 and worked with her older sister, Edna Bynoe, and the tenant task force. After the passing of her sister Edna, she stepped into leadership roles advocating for tenants. She worked with various boards within the community.

Valerie leaves to mourn her loving daughter, Charmaine C. Shelley, and granddaughter, Shaiquan S. Charles; grand-dog, Rocky; godson, Joshua Qualls; sisters: Marsha Slayton, Denise Dryden and Rhonda Bynoe; and brothers: George Bynoe, Keith Bynoe and Duane Bynoe. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Helen Bynoe; and siblings: Deborah, Edna, Michele, Brenda, Sheila and Crystal. She also leaves to mourn a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends and neighborhood families.
