Obituary for Betty Mae Condry (Hinton)

Betty Mae Condry was born on December 31, 1942, in Henderson, NC to the late Thomas (‘Buck’) Hinton Sr. and Mae Willie Hinton. Betty was educated in the Henderson Public Schools and later migrated with her eldest brother, the late Thomas Hinton Jr., to Boston, Massachusetts. It would be later that other family members, including her parents, would reunite in Boston, MA. In June 1961, Betty united in holy matrimony to the late Jessie Condry Jr. of Quincy, Florida. From this union was born five loving and devoted children – four daughters: Teresa, Linda, Sheila, Tanja and one son: Keith. Her children were her heart. Betty always demonstrated a passion for helping and caring for others. This would lead her to venture into one of her callings as a Nurse's aid. In these earlier years, she was also employed at the Shelburne Community Center, an old landmark in the heart of Roxbury, Massachusetts as well as Boston City Hall as a data keypunch processor until her health started to decline.

In 1974, Betty dedicated her life to the Lord where she served Him wholeheartedly until the end. Through trials and adversity, no matter what, she made a vow to God that she would remain steadfast in Him and dedicate her children to Him believing that He would guide them through life. In 1975, she joined Word of Life Tabernacle Church under the leadership of Bishop Samuel A. Darden, where she actively took part in the Missionary and Usher Board Ministries and served faithfully until she became physically challenged. Although Betty’s natural body experienced some major challenges, she never lost her praise nor her faith.

As a single parent, Betty loved and committed her life to her children. Teaching, correcting, and praying were the tools she used to help guide them through life. Betty’s love expanded beyond the walls of her biological children. It also extended to others that crossed her path. She had even more room in her heart for her grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of many others. When watching some of her favorite game shows, including Jeopardy, The Price is Right and Wheel-of-Fortune, Betty would challenge herself by creating her own team at home. Many times you would find her talking to the TV during her show, but never hearing a response back. This became comical for our family anytime we would watch the shows or be in the presence of our mom.

Betty, affectionately known as Ma, knew her way around the kitchen. This is where training began for her children and continued to her grandchildren. She loved cooking for the holidays and always set aside special time to bake with her grandkids. No doubt, Ma was the glue that made sure the love and respect remained between family members. Working was very important but Mom always made time for some type of enjoyment. She instilled the importance of making time for each other, whether cruising, going to family reunions, taking holiday trips, or just fellowshipping together during Sunday meals. This was a priority– along with prayer. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “A family that Prays together, Stays Together,” this was the happenings at “Betty Mae’s” house. Ma held the family together and never wavered from the Word that would take root and become our foundation in Christ Jesus. When you add it all up, mom’s testimony was, “GOD is My All and All”, “He’s my SAVIOR, HEALER, REDEEMER, MY EVERYTHING.”

On Saturday, June 25, 2022, Betty received her spiritual wings and transitioned from this earthly tabernacle to her heavenly home.
