Obituary for Barbara A. Shefton (Reason)

Barbara A. Shefton, daughter of the late Pinkney Reason and Lula Reason, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1938. The oldest of four children, she shortly moved to Boston, Massachusetts as a young child growing up in the South End. She attended Girls’ High School and would eventually get married at a young age; her first marriage to the late James W. Lewis, Sr. and then later to the late Henry Young, Sr. From these unions, she was blessed with four sons: James Jr., John, Henry Jr., and Troi.

Barbara would eventually find herself as a single mother, working tirelessly to put herself through school where she earned Business and Liberal Arts degrees from institutions like Boston University Metropolitan and Hickox Business School. She would use these skills and others along the way to work in corporate America, advancing herself as a Senior Executive Administrator for various Fortune 500 companies like Randstad, and Ernst & Young. This career path would last for over thirty-three (33) years before her retirement in 2005.

When Barbara wasn’t marching against injustice, working on a political campaign or strategy, performing or working with Playwrites Platform or travelling, she enjoyed being in her home working in her garden or cooking lavish meals for her family and friends.

Barbara is survived by sons: John A. Lewis; Henry Young, Jr., stepson Steven Woodward; stepdaughter, Tracy Gylchrist; sons: James W. Lewis, Jr. (deceased) and Troi A. Young (deceased) all residents of Boston.

She leaves behind six grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family here and afar. She is also survived by her sibling, Amber Marlena Reason. She was predeceased by her brothers: Pinkney Taylor Reason and Steven Otis Reason; parents: Pinkney Reason and Lula Johnson Crawford.
